about cascading colors

this site was inspired by the similarities between CSS and painting, particularly between the DOM structure and color derivation to produce visuals. much like the "cascading" of styles applied to nodes and their children in the DOM, color theory outlines the "cascade" of primary colors as they influence every other color in the visible spectrum.

the CSS cascade relies on source order, specificity, and importance. painting follows analogous rules of layering, detail, and salience of subjects. these rules are negotiated with an understanding of ryb color theory. CSS defines how elements should be rendered on a site just as colors and shading build an atmosphere for a painting.

inspiration for the CSS / color theory analogy was derived from my work as a designer (who is still learning HTML and CSS) and oil painter. there are also distinct influences from my studies in cognitive science, as both design (using HTML / CSS in this case) and painting require a development of visual perception and reasoning, both explicity and implicitly, and and a balance of the roles of creator and user / viewer.
